Foreign business in Indonesia

Business community of foreign enterprises in Indonesia has been looking forward into more ‘business friendly’ policies towards international companies operating in Indonesia. Indonesia is known not only from being a very attractive market but unfortunately more often from its’ protective business policies directed towards international investors. Many business sectors are closed for the foreign businesses and those opened have also plenty of limitations. Two most common entry barriers are: high capital requirements and regulation stating minimum local shareholdership.

For many business owners, especially those from the SME sectors, its very surprising that in order to start business in Indonesia company has to provide financial resources of at least ten billion Indonesian rupiah (around six hundred thousand American dollars). In addition, for the sectors where foreigners are allowed to invest, Indonesian government requires to grant Indonesian partner at least 51% of shares. How to start business in such situation?
